The W.T. Sampson Unit School FACS (Family and Consumer Science) class held its first Chopped competition.  This was an amazing event suggested by student, Cole Zmijiski, to teacher Mrs. Thomas. This competition was based on the television series Chopped.  Students were given surprise ingredients and had only 30 minutes to create a dish that would impress the judges.

Each team was comprised of students and a parent volunteer.  In addition to the surprise ingredients the students were provided with seasonings, vegetables, and herbs to use in the creation of their dish.  After their 30-minute cook time, each team had to present their dish to the judges and explain their dish.

This competition provided many skills for the students.  In addition to cooking skills, they had to use organization, time management, communication, creativity, and more.  What an excellent way to build the confidence of our students!

The show even had VIP judges in Naval Station Guantanamo Bay Commander, Captain Stephen.  The W.T. Sampson PTSO Secretary, Laretha Johnson, the school Information Specialist, Anthony White, and teacher, Shawnette Mendiola.

When asked about his participation as a judge, Captain Stephen had this to say, “ I absolutely loved every minute of it. Students spent a lot of time prepping and cooking wonderful food. It was also great to see all the volunteer parents and other teachers that were here to help and support the school.”

Volunteer parent, Jacquard Wilson said, “besides the pressure it was good.  Good for the kids and was good to see them in the element in class and helping and assisting them with this.”

Student, Marcus Wilson, said the competition was fun and that he and his dad are a dynamic duo in the kitchen.

The winning team was Liliana Hoffman, Kaliyah Milbrook, and Illeana Moreno.  Their parent volunteer was teacher and parent Michelle Davis.

Congratulations to Mrs. Thomas, Cole Zmijski, the students, and the volunteer parents.  Thank you to our judges!  This event would not have been a success without you.
