GTMO Spanish Class Project

Imagine living on a small Naval Base with limited amenities and relying on a bi-weekly barge for special items. Now, picture the government investing millions to expand our base by 10 square miles and seeking input from our young people. This is where our Spanish 3 students stepped in, showcasing their creativity and strategic thinking.
The Mission: Inspired by a recent visit from U.S. Senators, students were challenged to design a new area of the base, considering cultural integration, environmental factors, emergency preparedness, development themes, and community perspectives—all in Spanish.
Bringing Ideas to Life: Students created visual representations of their dream neighborhoods using various methods:
- Google Slides presentations
- A Minecraft neighborhood recreation
- Handmade posters
- A 3D model
They backed up their designs with detailed written proposals, explaining daily life and functionality.
The Town Hall Showdown: In a Town Hall-style presentation, students played the roles of Senators, asking and answering questions—all in Spanish. This event highlighted their Spanish skills, problem-solving abilities, community engagement, and public speaking.
This project not only enhanced their learning but also gave them a taste of real-world urban planning. Who knows? Maybe one day, one of these students will help shape the future of Guantanamo Bay!
