Elementary School STEM Healthcare Fair
W.T. Sampson Unit School had its first STEM Healthcare Career Day for out elementary school students in collaboration with the US Naval Hospital Guantanamo Bay!
The US Naval Hospital Guantanamo Bay came to our school and had inspiring talks, hands-on activities, and interactive sessions designed to ignite a passion for STEM and healthcare careers among our students. This event was a fantastic opportunity for students to explore the diverse and rewarding fields within healthcare, guided by professionals from the US Naval Hospital.
This event could not have happened without the vision of LT Bert Ketchum III the hospital Optometrist who reached out to the school to partner in creating a STEM event and organized the hospital staff who volunteered to have booths for our students. When asked about organizing this event, LT Ketchum stated that as the Diversity Officer, STEM outreach is a big part of his job and that he wanted to reinvigorate the collaborative relationship between the hospital and the school. He also said that working with the students, “was great, and that every age group was ready to learn and interested in what we were here to present.”
School AAPPS Teacher, Matthew Landreth, worked within the school to organize the event. He stated, “I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all the volunteers who contributed to making our Career STEM Fair a resounding success. Each and every one of our volunteers provided invaluable learning opportunities for our students, who were not only deeply appreciative but also genuinely thrilled to engage in the hands-on activities offered.”
Second grade student Beau Bean stated that the science fair was, “awesome.”
Second grade teacher, Marian Piansay, stated, “she liked the STEAM Fair because it allowed for her students to explore different fields withing science and medicine.”
We are excited to have provided our students with this unique chance to learn, engage, and envision their future in STEM and healthcare.
