Celebrating Our Teachers: Jennifer Knopf and Ashley Moreno Selected for Prestigious Learning Opportunity

We are thrilled to announce that two of our exceptional teachers from W.T. Sampson Elementary/High School, Jennifer Knopf (Kindergarten) and Ashley Moreno (5th Grade), have been selected for a prestigious learning opportunity with National History Day (NHD) and the American Battle Monuments Commission!

Jennifer and Ashley will embark on a journey to study the lives and service of American Veterans, honoring their sacrifices and contributions. This unique program is a testament to their dedication and passion for education and history. Through this experience, they will gain invaluable insights that will enrich their teaching and inspire their students.

Here is some info about Jennifer Knopf's Silent Hero research: As part of this course, Jennifer had to research a servicemember who died or went MIA during the Korean War. She chose SFC Frederick E. Fleming because her father shared his first name and middle initial and also served in the Army during the Korean War, like SFC Fleming.

Frederick E. Fleming was from Plainfield, New Hampshire. He was the oldest son in his family and had two sisters and one brother. He was 5’10” with blue eyes and brown hair. He worked at The Goodyear Rubber Company until he was drafted at age 18 in 1947.

He was assigned to Company E of the 5th Cavalry Regiment in June of 1950 and deployed to Korea. Within just a few weeks, he received a promotion to Sergeant. He was declared Missing in Action on August 15, 1950, near Waegwan, Korea. While a captive, he was injured by a U.S. F-84 Thunder Jet doing a strafing run on enemy lines. Frederick died on October 15, 1950, due to lack of medical attention, mistreatment, and malnutrition. He was 21 years old. His remains were never recovered.

Frederick’s brother, Bernard, also served in the Army during the Korean War but returned home safely. He went on to marry and have two sons, both named after his brother.

Join us in celebrating Jennifer and Ashley for their incredible work and commitment to honoring our fallen military heroes. We are immensely proud of their achievements and their unwavering dedication to their profession.
